Olympiacos in the elite multisport clubs

A special event took place with the participation of Olympiacos in Zagreb, Croatia, on "Women in sport". The event was held during the celebration of the 115th anniversary of the Croatian sport club, Hask Mladost. The two clubs have developed strong relationships in recent years through their cooperation in the Erasmus + European Programs as they are members of the EMCA. Olympiacos was represented by the Secretary General, Mrs. Christina Tsiligiri, who was also one of the main speakers of this event.

Ms. Tsiligiri had a very interesting presentation, making a different approach to this issue. In the first part of the speech, she made a small historical flashback on the position of woman in sport from antiquity to the present. In particular, she mentioned the ban on women's participation in the ancient Olympics and the evolution that took place during the second modern Olympic Games with the first participation in the supreme sporting event. Moreover, she focused on the presentation of women's sports departments within Olympiacos with a particular reference to two of the most successful teams in the history of Greek sports, women's polo and volleyball, numbering the range of their successes at national and European level.

The last part of the talk was about the position of women in sport governance, making an extensive reference to the issue of equality and diversity. Due to the lack of female presence in leading positions at national and international sport Federations, there is a need for sport management to be taken by professionals not based on the gender but based on their educational background, work experience, talents and skills. Specifically, Mrs Tsiligkiri stated: ‘’In my personal experience, especially in soccer and other male-dominated sports, there is a feeling that the man knows this sport. In reality, you know very well that nobody was born with knowledge. The necessary skills for these jobs are the educational level, the experience, the talent and the personal capabilities of each individual person. However, although the last few years have made an effort to improve women's participation in sport governance, and even if we have real examples that women's contribution to good governance in sport is very high, they are required to demonstrate to the colleagues and supervisors that she deserves to get there, can engage with every project. The woman has to prove on a daily basis that she can do her best in the work, but she is also a good mother and wife in the rest of the day. So I was thinking, what are the advantages of women in comparison with men. I don’t think the women are better than a man, or that the man is better than the woman. No one is better than other based on his/her gender. A person is better due to his/her particular characteristics which make him/her unique’’.
