10th final in four years!

Olympiacos achieved another important success in the European competitions. Following the winning of the CEV women’s Challenge Cup and the second position in the men’s one, the women’s water polo team qualified to the final of LEN Trophy as it beat Padova 10-4 in the Final Four semifinal held in Mataro. The ‘’Reds’’ will face Dunaujvaros in the final on Saturday. This will be the 6th final for the team in the last four years. The team had the support of the President Mr. Michalis Kountouris and a number of fans who were present on the venue. 

Key action: 

In the first half Olympiacos and Padova were on equal terms, the Greeks struggled in man-ups and could equalise for 2-2 in the dying seconds before the big break. Then like a whirlwind the Greeks blew their rivals away in the third. The ‘’Reds’’ were the absolute dominant and had the game under control. It took the lead with a goal Emmolo and then ran a 7-0 streak. Padova reduced to 3-8 but Olympiacos had already made an important step for the victory. 

In the last quarter, Olympiacos kept the rhytm and Tsoukala scored for 9-3. Tielman reduced to 9-4 but Avramidou did the final 4-10 six minutes before the end of the game.

Pavlidis: "We were very nervous at the beginning and our attempts were not so good. However, our defense was excellent and Diamantopoulou was amazing. I was expecting an outburst with one or two goals which could make our work easier. We are expecting a better performance tomorrow in man-ups and a similar defense. We have a similar defensive performance, I am sure we will win against any opponent.’’ 

The captain, Filio Manolioudaki, said: ‘’We did the first step against a very good team and now, we have to concentrate on the next opponent. We will do our best as we did today. We were bad in man-ups but we found solutions and showed the quality of our team. I would like to do some comments for our fans. They are used to following us everywhere. They are our family. I also congratulate the women’s volleyball team and hope that we will do something similar tomorrow.’’

Emmolo underpinned: ‘’We are very happy.  Our goal was the qualification and we did it. Now, we are focusing on the tomorrow final. We expect to know our opponent. We believe on ourselves and we will be passionate. The fans follow us everywhere and are an extra player.’’
